An island of only 2,000 square kilometres, Tenerife seems to pack a number of apposite destinations into one layered gem. Mt Teide in the interior is the European Union’s second-highest mountain (although it lies off the coast of southern Morocco). It is the world’s third-largest volcano when measured from the base. The island can have snow blanketing the highlands and tropical heat at the coast. It is hard to know how to dress for short drives or hiking excursions, because there can be a 3,000-metre elevation or 30-degree temperature change. Even on a level walk in the interior, the weather can change dramatically without notice. There are a number of flowering plants that grow nowhere else. Many visitors stay only at coastal resorts, for sun, drinks and water activities, but it seems a shame to bypass the extraordinary geologies of the interior, the quaint historical South American immigrant villages, the Spanish and Guanche (local) dishes such as goat stew, the historic architecture and extraordinary vistas. Even for incompatible travel partners, Tenerife can offer something for everyone.
Land of extremes : Set in Africa, part of Spain, with one of the world's largest volcanos and myriad endemic species, Tenerife in the Canary Islands is a unique adventure
