Eastern promise : Leipzig is one of a handful of booming east German cities and the one most capable of stealing Berlin’s thunder

Eastern promise

After the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) fell in 1989, the new, formerly communist states were absorbed by the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), starting a couple of decades of income and infrastructure disparity between the two Germanies. The new states were poorer, unemployment was greater, and many families moved west for better economic opportunities and quality of life.

While politically the new states are still more alternative and reactionary than their western counterparts, economically they are quickly catching up, especially the larger cities, including Leipzig, Dresden, Potsdam and others. In fact, migration patterns are reversing, with many Germans and foreigners moving to Saxony, Brandenburg and the other new states for greater job opportunities and cheaper rents and cost of living. With its long history as a trade hub, and now reinforced as a congress and industrial centre, Leipzig is set to benefit most. And with the world’s largest train station, new conference halls, vibrant cultural spaces and even Germany’s best and largest zoo, Leipzig still has room to grow.

Leipzig is also incredibly beautiful, juxtaposing traditional and modern architecture and design more seamlessly than most. It may not be long before it is considered a more attractive place to live than the capital, Berlin, 150km away.

This will be the first of an occasional series on East German cities and regions. Underexposed for too long, these destinations are among the most picturesque and rewarding in Germany and broader Central Europe.
