Every September, Mexico commemorates the anniversary of its independence. September 16th is the country’s most important national celebration. The Cry of Independence, “El Grito”, which occurred around midnight on September 15th, 1810, is one of the most significant events in the history of our country as it marks the beginning of the fight for Mexico to become an independent nation.
The War of Independence began when the priest, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, called on the town of Dolores to rise up in arms against colonial rule. He summoned the townsfolk by ringing the bells of his parish and passionately sharing the reasons why they needed to take up arms to fight for Mexico's independence.
To commemorate this important moment in our history, a ceremony is held each year led by the President of Mexico at the Zocalo (Main Square) in Mexico City. As the president mentions each hero's name, the people gathered at the Zocalo enthusiastically reply with "¡Viva! ¡Viva!," an expression that represents respect and admiration for the national heroes. At the end, it is customary to shout “¡Viva México!” three times as a symbol of hope for a better and more prosperous future for the country and its people.
While the main ceremony of "The Cry of Independence" is led by the president in Mexico City, similar ceremonies are held in every city, town and village across the country, as well as at Mexican embassies and consulates overseas where ambassadors and consuls lead "El Grito" in honour of those who sacrificed their lives for the independence of our country.
This year, Mexico commemorates the 214th anniversary of the start of its independence movement.
Mexico and Thailand formalised their bonds of friendship by establishing diplomatic relations on 28 August 1975. Thus, this year marks the 49th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Thailand, two countries whose ties have grown closer and stronger through cultural, commercial and cooperative exchanges. Mexico recognises Thailand as an important friend and partner both bilaterally and regionally.
In 2025, the two countries will commemorate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, providing an opportunity to strengthen the joint work on projects of common interest, enhancing and enriching our bonds of friendship for the prosperity and well-being of both our peoples. We very much look forward to building on our strategic partnership and together finding solutions to the most pressing issues of our time.
Viva Mexico & Viva Tailandia!
