Message for Swiss National Day
1 August 2024

Dear Friends of Switzerland, Sawasdee Krub,

On the first of August 2024, we celebrate the 733rd anniversary of the Swiss Confederation. Nestled in the heart of the Alps, the cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden forged a pact – a promise to stand together and settle differences through mediation. This alliance became the seed from which Switzerland would grow. The Swiss National Day, therefore, celebrates not just a founding moment, but the enduring spirit of cooperation, the art of compromise and the rules-based order that continues to define Switzerland's place in Europe and the world.

This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, which set essential guidelines for the conduct of war and the protection of civilians as well as prisoners. These conventions underscore our country’s ongoing commitment to upholding international humanitarian law as illustrated by our organization of the Summit on Peace in Ukraine last June, hosted by Swiss President Viola Amherd and in which Thailand participated. The summit exemplifies Switzerland’s dedication to mediation and conflict resolution. As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the term 2023-2024, Switzerland continues to influence key decisions affecting global security and peace.

Close human connections are an important factor of successful global cooperation, and the relations between Switzerland and Thailand provide a case in point. From the arrival of Swiss merchants to the Kingdom of Siam throughout the 19th century to the opening of a Swiss Consulate in Bangkok in 1932, there has been a longstanding Swiss presence in Thailand. Today, more than 10,000 Swiss citizens live in this wonderful country. As we look back, we also feel honoured by the close relationship between the Thai Royal family and Switzerland, dating back to the travels of His Majesty Rama V through Switzerland in 1897 and strengthened by His Majesty King Rama IX’s childhood and student years in Lausanne.

Switzerland and Thailand share a rich history of friendship and cooperation, marked by mutual respect and understanding. As Switzerland remains committed to promoting peace, democracy, prosperity and sustainable development, I am convinced that our continued collaboration and exchange with Thailand will further benefit both countries and societies substantially.

Happy Swiss National Day!
