Message of the Ambassador of Peru to Thailand, H.E. Ms. Cecilia Galarreta
On behalf of the Peruvian Government and People, I am honored to extend our warmest greetings to the Thai Government, and our partners and friends in the Kingdom of Thailand, on the occasion of two special celebrations this July 28th. First, the birthday anniversary of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua, and second, the 203rd Anniversary of Peru's National Independence. For Peru, this year marks a milestone as we also commemorate the Bicentennial of the Battles of Junín and Ayacucho, events that solidified our independence.
Since the establishment of our diplomatic ties in 1965, our two nations have built a partnership based on mutual respect, shared values, and a commitment to progress and prosperity. Peru and Thailand, despite our geographical distance, share many commonalities that are not widely known: we are both heirs to ancient cultures that developed over centuries in our respective territories; our populations are hard-working and creative; we are rich in natural and maritime resources and global leaders in biodiversity; and our exceptional landscapes and cuisines have garnered international recognition, making us attractive tourist destinations.
Peru and Thailand have been strategic partners for over ten years, sharing the objective of serving as gateways to Southeast Asia and South America, respectively. Next year, we will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic relations. Our bilateral ties encompass a wide range of areas, including trade, investment, education, and cultural exchanges. Peru is one of only two Latin American countries with which Thailand has a free trade agreement (currently partial), and we are working together to make it a comprehensive one. Thailand is the only country in South East Asia with which Peru has a Development Cooperation Program. These connections have contributed to strengthen our bonds, bring our peoples closer together and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of each other’s cultures.
In the multilateral arena, our partnership flourishes as well. Both our nations are active members of APEC, with Peru proudly holding the presidency this year. Additionally, within ASEAN, Peru has become "Development Partner," a status we achieved with the support of Thailand.
There are still many areas in which we can learn from each other, such as tourism promotion, environment, science, technology and innovation, public health, and alternative development. In this regard, as we look forward to the future, we will continue working together on issues of shared interest, promoting initiatives to the benefit of both our nations.
Let us celebrate this special date with joy and pride, reflecting on our accomplishments in order to bring about an even closer cooperation and friendship. Together, we can fulfil our aspirations and create a legacy of lasting partnership and mutual prosperity.
Thank you. Khop khun kha. Muchas gracias.
